Danny Clinch
Perfectly Imperfect
Client: Leo Burnett
Gorgeous images came with a happy creative director attached to it. As he was getting comfy in my chair, nothing was said. He handed over his drive and waited. Ready to pounce. I had just finished Friends and Family for Sprint, but at that moment, when I opened those images...
Danny's shots would go on to inspire my personal "eye" development. I studied his photography and his ability to capture the story and soul in an image, is captivating. The eyes are gorgeous. Evidence of an incredible communicator.
Post Direction:
"Make them perfectly imperfect, still human rugged, but nothing too eye drawing or tangental."
Design Problem:
Images had tight crops on their face, most fly-aways needed to be kept, an adjustable color gradient background had to be input while framing up white semi-opaque European copy. The copy would be over most of the face and forehead with the eyes peeking through. Odd color and semi-reversed shadow direction look FPO provided.
Solution:
The two-way conversation went like this: "So, perfectly imperfect raccoons?" my eyebrow arched. His finger raised high and face serious, "Yes, but beautiful raccoons with unrealistic color hits".
Deep Breath, "Cool". Him cheeky, "Right?" Me smiling widely, "Let's do this."
All rights Leo Burnett and Philip Morris International. Images have been released, crop released and branding removed. For reasons of popularity with my students, said mentor of mine has asked to remain a mystery, but easily referenced for the true enthusiast. Cheers!
